KTA1 Electric Dump Truck for Asphalt and Road Construction: Temperature, Timing and Cycle Constraints

Dongfeng KTA1 electric dump truck delivering asphalt to a paver — EV truck in road construction duty

Asphalt haulage is the most time-critical duty in road construction. Hot mix arrives at roughly 150–170 °C, must be placed within a defined temperature window, and cannot wait. That means the haulage fleet is planned against a clock rather than against tonnage — and it also means the fleet spends a great deal of its shift stationary, queuing at the plant or holding behind the paver. The Dongfeng KTA1 electric dump truck — CATL 352 kWh LFP, LvKong 270 kW rated / 450 kW peak with a 4-speed AMT — is well matched to it, because the electric drivetrain removes the fuel cost of all that waiting. This article covers the temperature discipline, the timing maths, the body specification and the operational rules.

The Temperature Window Governs Everything

StageTypical temperatureConstraint
At plant discharge150–170 °CSet by mix design
Arrival at paver (minimum)130–145 °C depending on mixBelow this, compaction cannot be achieved
Compaction windowAbove ~110 °CRoller pattern must complete before the mat cools
Cooling rate in transit1.5–4 °C per 10 minutesDriven by ambient, wind, body insulation and load mass

From that table comes the operational rule that defines the whole plan: haul time, not haul distance, is the constraint. A 12 km haul in free-flowing traffic may be fine; the same 12 km through congestion is not.

Building the Timing Model

Plan the cycle in minutes, then check it against the temperature budget:

With a temperature budget of, say, 20–35 °C of allowable loss and a cooling rate of 2–3 °C per 10 minutes, the loaded leg plus hold must fit inside roughly 70–110 minutes. Everything else in the plan follows from that.

Body Specification for Hot Mix

Hot mix damages bodies that were specified for spoil. Four requirements:

  1. Insulation. An insulated body significantly slows cooling and is the single most valuable option on long or congested hauls. It also protects the body structure from thermal cycling.
  2. Release agent discipline. Asphalt sticks. A consistent release-agent routine prevents build-up that reduces effective payload and causes discharge problems.
  3. Steep tipping angle and smooth interior. Hot mix must discharge cleanly and quickly; carry-back reduces payload and cools into hardened material in the body.
  4. Cover or tarpaulin. Required on most public-road hauls and valuable for temperature retention as well as safety.

Full body options are set out in our electric tipper body specification guide.

Fleet Sizing for a Paving Train

The number of trucks is set by the paver's output, not by tonnage targets:

ParameterWorked example
Paver output250 t/hour
Payload per truck22 t
Trucks required per hour11.4
Cycle time55 minutes
Trucks required (output × cycle ÷ payload)250 × 0.92 ÷ 22 ≈ 10.5 → 11 trucks
Buffer for delays+2 trucks
Fleet13 KTA1 units

Under-sizing the fleet is the classic paving failure: the paver stops, the mat cools, and a joint is created that will crack. Electric trucks do not change this arithmetic, but they do make the buffer cheaper to run, because waiting trucks consume almost nothing.

Energy Budget on Paving Duty

Paving duty is moderate distance with long idle periods:

Winter paving adds a further consideration: cold ambient increases cooling rate of the mix and reduces pack efficiency. Pre-condition the cab and, where possible, charge during warmer parts of the day. See winter preparation for electric trucks.

Night Paving: The Electrification Advantage

Night paving is common on urban roads and highways, precisely because it minimises traffic disruption — and it is where an electric fleet has a structural advantage beyond cost:

Our night operations guide covers lighting, crew welfare and charging alignment for night work.

Kenya and East African Road Programmes

East African road construction combines long haul distances from plant to site, high ambient temperatures and growing urban paving work — conditions where insulated bodies and a thermally-specified truck matter. Our Kenya market page covers import, deployment and support for Kenyan contractors. Related: Nairobi fleet deployment, Mombasa port corridor and East Africa market analysis.

Operational Checklist

  1. Model the cycle in minutes against the mix's allowable temperature loss.
  2. Specify insulated bodies for hauls over roughly 25 minutes loaded.
  3. Size the fleet from paver output, not tonnage, and add a buffer.
  4. Set a release-agent routine and enforce it.
  5. Configure charging to the shift pattern: overnight for single shift, opportunity charge at shift change for two.
  6. Instrument the pilot: loads per shift, kWh per tonne, and paver stoppages caused by haulage.

KTA1 FOB pricing typically falls in the USD 90,000–125,000 band depending on body and specification, with the CATL pack warranted 8 years / 4,500 cycles to 80% state of health.

Working With the Paving Crew

The haulage fleet and the paving train are one production system, and most asphalt problems attributed to haulage are actually interface problems. Four practices prevent them:

An electric fleet changes one thing here: waiting costs almost nothing in energy, so the temptation is to run a larger buffer. Resist it — the concrete-equivalent constraint is temperature, not fuel, and a larger buffer simply means more mix cooling in more trucks.
