The second chapter is opening to the east, and it is structurally different: East Africa combines some of the continent's best renewable electricity, the most aggressive e-mobility policy frameworks, and logistics corridors that are being rebuilt around standard-gauge rail. This analysis covers the three markets where our East African enquiries are concentrating — Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda — and which Dongfeng EV truck configurations fit the duty cycles we actually see.

Kenya: The Region's Most Ready Market

Kenya is East Africa's e-mobility flagship. The National Electric Mobility Policy direction, fiscal incentives on electric vehicle imports (reduced duty rates on EVs and their components, VAT treatment that has improved markedly), and a private sector already deploying electric motorcycles, buses and light trucks create familiarity up and down the supply chain. The commercial logic on the Mombasa–Nairobi corridor (roughly 480 km) is segment-based: the full corridor exceeds single-charge heavy truck range today, but the corridor decomposes into port shuttle, Nairobi distribution and inland-container-depot legs that each sit inside 200–250 km — exactly our electric tractor sweet spot.

Tanzania: SGR Interfaces and Mining

Tanzania's story is the Standard Gauge Railway — moving bulk freight off the road network shifts truck demand from long-haul to feeder duty: mine to SGR siding, port to inland container depot. Shorter, heavier, fixed loops are precisely the electric truck profile. Add Tanzania's mining sector — gold in the Lake Victoria zone, coal and iron in the south — and the demand picture splits cleanly:

  1. Mining tipper duty — TZ3Z and TZ3V-class electric dump trucks on pit-to-siding routes under 120 km, powered by emerging mine-site solar.
  2. Port feeder duty in Dar es Salaam — electric tractors on container legs between the port and inland depots.
  3. Construction supply for corridor growth — KTA1-class city tippers for the road and rail works themselves.

Uganda: Small but Structurally Compelling

Uganda's electricity is overwhelmingly hydro — clean, and priced for industry around USD 0.06–0.09/kWh where supply is contracted. The market is small but the operational logic for fleets around Kampala, the industrial corridor to Jinja, and the nascent oil-region construction around Hoima is strong: short fixed cycles, expensive imported diesel, cheap renewable power. We quote Kampala distribution fleets on KT5M box trucks and construction fleets on KTA1 tippers; the battery-swap-capable KTA family also suits the emerging industrial-park logistics around the capital.

The Import Reality: RHD, Duty and Documentation

All three markets drive on the left — right-hand drive. This matters more than any other single specification decision: our RHD families (TZ5Y and TZ4Y tippers, TE9Y and TEAY tractors, and RHD variants of the cargo range) are factory-engineered RHD, preserving cab strength certification and parts coherence. Converting LHD stock in the aftermarket voids that engineering — we do not do it and advise clients never to accept it.

Duty structuring in the region: Kenya's EV incentives apply to defined categories with documentation we prepare; Tanzania and Uganda assess standard CBU schedules with sectoral exemptions available for mining and industrial projects. COMESA/EAC origin treatment does not apply to Chinese-built units, so planning around the correct HS classification and any available EV carve-outs is where a licensed clearing agent earns their fee. Deployment Economics on a Kenyan Cement Route

A worked example: Athi River quarry shuttle, 80 km/day loaded-out cycle, 300 days, 24,000 km/year. Diesel 8x4 at 36 L/100 km: 8,640 L, USD 10,800–12,000 at Kenyan diesel prices. Electric tipper at 1.4 kWh/km: 33,600 kWh, USD 3,400–4,000 at industrial tariffs. Maintenance difference adds USD 3,000–4,500. Annual advantage: USD 10,000–13,000 per truck. With Kenya's EV duty relief on the import side, the payback lands inside 4 years for single-shift and under 3 for double-shift operations.
