TZ3V Electric Dump Truck Buying Guide: Mining Specifications, Options and Price Bands for Fleet Buyers

Dongfeng TZ3V 8x4 electric dump truck with 600 kWh CATL pack — buying specification and price guide for mining fleets

Mining fleets buy differently from logistics fleets: the asset is specified against a known deposit, a known haul profile and a known tonnage target, and the purchase decision is driven by cost per tonne rather than cost per kilometre. The Dongfeng TZ3V electric dump truck — 8x4, CATL 600 kWh LFP, LvKong 400 kW rated / 550 kW peak through an HDZ300 rear axle — is our largest road-legal electric tipper, and this guide walks through exactly how to specify and buy one: which options matter, which do not, where the payload-versus-range trade-off actually bites, and what the price bands look like.

Core Specification

Rear axleHDZ300 heavy-duty tandem
Typical payload40–60 t depending on body, material density and local axle limits
Realistic range200–260 km loaded haul cycles; 6–10 hours continuous depending on grade
ChargingDual-gun GB/T DC, up to 600 A; 20–80% in ~40 min
Battery swapCompatible configuration, 5–6 minute exchange
Indicative FOBUSD 140,000–180,000 depending on body and options

Step 1: Establish the haul profile before you specify anything

Every subsequent decision depends on four numbers. Get them from your mine plan, not from a brochure:

  1. Haul distance one way and whether it grows as the pit deepens.
  2. Net gradient — loaded uphill or loaded downhill. This is the single largest energy variable. A loaded-uphill profile at 6% can consume 2.4–3.0 kWh/km; the same road loaded downhill with regen can net 0.9–1.4 kWh/km.
  3. Material density. A 30 m³ body holding 1.4 t/m³ material carries 42 t; the same body in 2.4 t/m³ ore would be grossly overloaded. Body volume must be matched to density, not chosen by habit.
  4. Shift pattern — hours per day, number of shifts, and whether trucks run continuously.

Step 2: Choose the body for the material

Body specification is where most first orders go wrong. Three decisions:

Full detail in our electric tipper body specification guide.

Step 3: Understand the payload-versus-range trade-off

This is the question every mining buyer asks, and the honest answer is that on site haulage it rarely binds:

Haul profileEnergy per shift (10 h)Shifts per chargeVerdict
Short shuttle, 2 km, loaded uphill180–240 kWh2+ shiftsPayload limited, not energy limited
Medium haul, 8 km, mixed grade280–380 kWh1.5 shiftsCharge at shift change
Long haul, 20 km, loaded uphill450–600 kWh1 shiftOvernight charge mandatory; consider swap
Continuous 24 h operationBattery swap, 5–6 min per exchange

Because the 600 kWh pack is sized for a full shift of heavy duty, adding payload almost never requires reducing range below the operational requirement. Where it does bind — very long hauls or 24-hour campaigns — the answer is swap, not a bigger pack.

Step 4: Options that are worth the money, and those that are not

Worth specifying:

Usually not worth it:

Step 5: Price bands and what moves them

Indicative FOB ranges as of 2026, before freight, duty and local costs:

Remember that FOB is 60–75% of landed cost on most mining import routes. Freight, insurance, duty, VAT and port handling add the remainder; our import, payment and shipping guide sets out the mechanics.

Step 6: Procurement sequence

  1. Technical specification workshop — haul profile, body, thermal and dust packages.
  2. Energy simulation against your actual profile; confirm shifts per charge.
  3. Quotation with configuration sheet — FOB, options, lead time, warranty terms.
  4. Site visit or reference deployment where available.
  5. Contract and deposit — 30% T/T with the production order, 70% against bill of lading copy; L/C at sight accepted.
  6. Production 45–75 days, pre-shipment inspection, UN 38.3 battery documentation.
  7. Shipping and commissioning — charger energised before trucks land.

Latin America: Mexico, Chile and Peru

Latin American mining is the most active enquiry source we have for large electric dump trucks, driven partly by corporate decarbonisation commitments and partly by the simple economics of diesel at altitude. Our Mexico market page covers import, deployment and service support for Mexican mining operators, including the practicalities of battery swap at site. Regional tariff and homologation detail is in our Latin America import guide, and a direct diesel comparison is worked through in TZ3V versus diesel cost per tonne.

Bottom Line

Buy the TZ3V by specifying the haul first and the truck second. Get the gradient direction, material density and shift pattern right, match the body to the material, and the 600 kWh pack will cover a full shift with margin. Then instrument it: cost per tonne is the number that will fund your second order.

Operator Training on Large Electric Tippers

An 8x4 electric tipper at 60 tonnes is not a vehicle that operators adapt to by instinct. Four training elements consistently separate fleets that hit their productivity targets from those that do not:

  1. Regenerative braking on haul roads. Most of the energy recovery available on a mine haul road comes from anticipating the descent and letting regeneration hold speed. Taught properly, this is worth 8–15% of shift energy.
  2. Payload discipline. Overloading an electric tipper does not cause more fuel burn — it causes range shortfalls and tyre and suspension damage. Crews need to understand the new failure mode.
  3. Charging and swap procedure. Who connects, when, and what the minimum departure state of charge is. Written, enforced, and reported through telematics.
  4. Fault reporting. What to photograph, what data to capture, who to call. This is what converts a warranty claim from a dispute into a service ticket.

We deliver this as part of commissioning, and it is the single highest-return item in the deployment budget. See the driver training programme and incentive scheme design for sustaining the behaviour after the trainers leave.
