KT5L Electric Cargo Truck Deep Dive: 348 kWh Pack, Body Range and Chassis Specification

Dongfeng KT5L electric cargo truck with 348 kWh CATL pack — product deep dive on this mid-range EV truck

The middle of a commercial vehicle range is where most fleets actually operate, and it is where specification mistakes are most expensive. Too little battery and the truck misses a second route; too much and the capital is parked in kWh the duty never uses. The Dongfeng KT5L electric cargo truck sits deliberately in that middle: CATL 348 kWh LFP, LvKong e-axle drive, and body lengths from 7,700 mm upward. This deep dive covers what the platform is, how it differs from its KT5M and KT5J stablemates, and how to decide whether 348 kWh is the right number for your fleet.

Platform Position

ModelBatteryBody / classDesigned duty
KT5JCATL 262/310 kWhLight delivery, high drop densityUrban last mile, e-commerce, retail
KT5LCATL 348 kWhMedium rigid, long body optionsRegional distribution, bulky freight
KT5MCATL 262/310 kWhBox truck, urban and airportCity distribution, cold chain
KTH3CATL 400 kWhHeavy rigidRegional trunk, industrial freight

The KT5L's distinguishing feature is not peak power but usable volume and range: it is the model specified when the constraint is cube and distance rather than drop count.

Drivetrain: LvKong E-Axle

The KT5L uses a LvKong electric axle — motor, inverter and reduction gearing integrated into the axle assembly rather than a separate motor driving a propshaft. Three consequences matter to operators:

Battery: 348 kWh CATL LFP

The 348 kWh figure is deliberate. It sits above the light-duty 262/310 kWh options and below the 400 kWh heavy rigid, which positions it for routes that need a full day plus reserve:

DutyConsumptionUsable range on 348 kWh
Dense urban, frequent stops0.70–0.85 kWh/km350–430 km
Suburban mixed0.80–0.95 kWh/km310–380 km
Regional highway, loaded0.95–1.15 kWh/km260–320 km
Regional with reefer body1.15–1.45 kWh/km210–265 km

Warranty terms are the same as across the range: 8 years or 4,500 cycles to 80% state of health. On regional duty at 300 km per day that is comfortably beyond a ten-year ownership window. Our analysis of how long an electric truck battery lasts works through the cycle arithmetic in detail.

Body Options and Payload Maths

The most important specification step is deciding whether your freight is weight-limited or cube-limited, because they push body choice in opposite directions:

  1. Cube-limited freight (furniture, appliances, packaging, textiles, FMCG): maximise internal length and height. The KT5L's long body options are the reason to choose it over the KT5M.
  2. Weight-limited freight (beverages, building materials, paper, metal): maximise payload allowance. Remember that a longer body adds tare mass directly.
  3. Temperature-controlled freight: insulation and refrigeration reduce internal volume and add mass; a reefer KT5L loses roughly 8–12% of internal cube and 250–500 kg of payload to the refrigeration system. See refrigerated body engineering for the KT5L.
  4. Curtainsider versus box: curtainsider gives faster side loading and slightly lower tare; box gives security and better temperature control.

Rule of thumb we give customers: work out your average load's density. Below roughly 200 kg/m³ you are cube-limited; above roughly 350 kg/m³ you are weight-limited. Most FMCG distribution sits in between and can be specified either way.

Charging Specification

At 348 kWh the KT5L is larger than a light delivery truck, and depot planning must reflect that:

Safety and Driver Equipment

Regional distribution drivers spend long hours in the vehicle, and modern fleet tenders increasingly specify active safety. Available equipment and regulatory context are covered in ADAS and GSR2 compliance for EV trucks. Two items to specify explicitly on the KT5L: a reversing camera and sensor package (long bodies have poor rear visibility), and a driver-monitoring or fatigue alert function for regional routes.

Central Asia: Uzbekistan and the CIS Corridor

Central Asian distribution is a strong fit for the KT5L: long inter-city routes, low electricity tariffs, and a growing manufacturing and retail base. Our Uzbekistan market page covers import, deployment and support for Uzbek operators, including Tashkent regional distribution. Verdict: When to Choose the KT5L

Choose the KT5L when your duty is regional rather than urban, when your freight is bulky rather than dense, and when you want one vehicle to cover both a city route and a 250 km inter-city leg without a mid-day charge. Choose the KT5J instead if your constraint is drop count, and the KT5M if your work is predominantly city distribution with tight access. A direct comparison is available in KT5L versus KT5M, and the lighter end of the range is reviewed in our KT5L city delivery review.

KT5L FOB pricing typically falls in the USD 62,000–92,000 band depending on body length and specification.

Resale, Reassignment and Fleet Flexibility

Medium rigids are the most flexible asset in most fleets, and that flexibility is worth specifying for. Three considerations:

Fleets that expect to reassign vehicles between duties should say so at quotation stage, because it changes the electrical and mounting specification. Fleets with stable, single-purpose routes can optimise more narrowly and save capital. Both approaches are correct; what costs money is discovering the requirement after delivery.
