Steel and scrap are the densest legal payloads a road tractor will ever carry, and that single fact drives every specification decision. Steel coil, billet and scrap put a vehicle at gross mass with a fraction of the load volume, on short high-cycle routes, in environments that are hot, dusty and abrasive. It is punishing work, and it is also work where an electric drivetrain has an unusually clear advantage: maximum torque from standstill, no penalty for the constant stop-start of yard operation, and no diesel particulate in an enclosed works. The Dongfeng TE8M electric tractor — 6x4, 80 t GCW, CATL 466/497/600 kWh LFP, LvKong 400 kW rated / 550 kW peak, DF701S/DF485 axles — is built for it.
| Load | Density and character | Handling requirement | Tractor implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel coil | Very dense, 6–25 t per coil | Coil well or cradle trailer, careful load distribution | Concentrated fifth-wheel load; low centre of gravity |
| Billet and bar | Dense, uniform, bundled | Flatbed or stake trailer with secure lashing | High gross, stable load, high friction demand on start |
| Scrap | Variable, 0.6–1.8 t/m³ | High-volume open or walking-floor trailer | Overload risk on volume; sharp debris, tyre damage risk |
| Finished steel products | Moderate density, damage-sensitive | Covered or curtain trailer | Smooth torque delivery reduces load shift |
The recurring specification error in scrap haulage is sizing the trailer for volume and then discovering the combination is over gross mass before the body is full. Always specify scrap trailers to the mass limit, not the volume limit.
Four reasons specific to steel and scrap duty:
Steel and scrap haulage typically splits into two patterns, and the energy model differs between them:
| Pattern | Distance | Cycles/shift | Consumption | Shift energy | Pack choice |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intra-works shuttle | 1–4 km | 25–45 | 1.6–2.1 kWh/km | 150–280 kWh | 466 or 497 kWh |
| Works to port / rail head | 25–70 km | 4–8 | 1.35–1.65 kWh/km | 280–420 kWh | 600 kWh |
| Mixed duty | — | — | 1.5–1.8 kWh/km | 260–380 kWh | 497 or 600 kWh |
Note the consumption figures are higher than for a 49 t logistics tractor, because gross mass is higher and yard surfaces are poor. Sizing on a generic 1.2 kWh/km assumption is the most common error in this segment.
Scrap yards and steel works damage vehicles. Five specification items pay for themselves:
Steel and scrap operations buy on cost per tonne. A worked intra-works comparison at 30 t average payload, 30 cycles per shift, 300 shifts per year:
In markets with higher diesel prices or works that run two shifts, the annual figure rises proportionally.
Steel plants are among the easiest industrial sites to electrify:
West Africa's steel recycling and rolling sector is growing with urban construction and infrastructure demand, and Nigerian operators are among the most active enquirers for heavy electric tractors in the region. Our Nigeria market page covers import, deployment and service support for Nigerian industrial fleets. Also: cycle distance and count, yard surface condition, shift pattern, ambient temperature range, and available electrical capacity at the works. With those we specify the pack, axle package, tyre and protection options, and the charging or swap strategy. TE8M FOB pricing typically falls in the USD 120,000–165,000 band depending on pack and axle specification, with the CATL pack warranted 8 years / 4,500 cycles to 80% state of health.
Steel and scrap operations run on documented mass, and the weighbridge is the point where vehicle specification meets commercial reality. Three items matter:
Payload verification is covered in weigh-in-motion and payload telematics. On the vehicle side, two specification items support the same goal: a reversing camera with a wide field of view, because a tractor manoeuvring in a scrap yard has severe blind spots, and a robust underbody protection package, because debris in the yard is the leading cause of damage to components mounted beneath the chassis.
