
For buyers of Dongfeng EV trucks in West Africa, the choice of delivery port is not just about logistics cost — it determines the road quality of the last leg, the customs clearance time, and ultimately whether the trucks arrive in serviceable condition. This article compares the three ports most of our West African customers use: Lomé (Togo), Tema (Ghana), and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), with practical notes on each destination country.
Roll-on / roll-off (RoRo) ships deliver trucks under their own power from the loading port to the destination. The alternative is containerisation, which requires the trucks to be disassembled for the ocean leg and reassembled at the destination — a process that adds roughly USD 2,800 to 4,500 per truck in cost plus 14 to 21 days of labour. RoRo is preferred when the truck can be safely driven and the destination port has good RoRo discharge capability.
The West African port selection influences:
For electric trucks specifically, an additional factor: the truck arrives with a partial state-of-charge (typically 30 to 40 percent). The handler at the port needs to be able to plug in, slow-charge, or otherwise keep the battery at safe state-of-charge during the waiting period before customs clearance is completed. This is a relatively new requirement that not all West African ports have fully adapted to yet.

Lomé Container Terminal (LCT) and the adjacent RoRo quay at the Autonomous Port of Lomé handle the majority of landlocked West Africa’s imports. The port has been upgraded substantially over the past decade with Chinese investment (a concessional finance package through Exim Bank), and is now the deepest natural deep-water port in West Africa, able to handle Post-Panamax vessels without tidal restrictions.
Lomé is the strongest port for shipments destined for Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso), Niger (Niamey via Parakou), and northern Ghana (Tamale, Bolgatanga).
Tema is Ghana’s largest port, located 30 km east of Accra. It handles the bulk of Ghana’s imports and a substantial portion of transit traffic to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger via the Tema–Ouagadougou corridor.
Tema is the strongest port for shipments destined for southern Burkina Faso (mainly Ouagadougou), northern Ghana mining sites (Ahafo, Obuasi), and Mali (Bamako via Sikasso).

Port Autonome d’Abidjan (PAA) handles the bulk of Côte d’Ivoire’s imports and significant transit traffic to Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. The port has both container and RoRo quays, and a free trade zone that simplifies customs processing for transit.
Abidjan is the strongest port for shipments destined for Mali (Bamako), Guinea (Conakry, Kankan), Burkina Faso via the southern route (Bobo-Dioulasso), and northern Côte d’Ivoire (Korhogo, Odienné).

For a customer in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso): Tema is the most reliable choice based on road quality and customs predictability. Lomé is a strong alternative if customs are pre-cleared in advance.
For Bamako (Mali): Abidjan is the clear choice based on road quality and existing logistics density.
For Niamey (Niger): Lomé is the conventional route, although some operators now use Cotonou (Benin) or Tema as alternatives.
For Conakry (Guinea): Conakry port itself is functional but slow; many operators use Abidjan plus onward haulage for large EV truck orders.
