Run the same haul through both machines: 5 km one-way pit-to-crusher, 8% loaded descent, 80 t GCW, 12 hours/day, 300 days/year. A pure diesel truck burns roughly 55–70 L per 100 km on this profile plus idle — call it USD 95,000–120,000 in fuel per truck-year at USD 1.50/L delivered. The TZ5Y consumes 3.2–4.2 kWh/km loaded-descent-net, charged at USD 0.08–0.12/kWh: USD 11,500–18,000 per truck-year in energy, plus charger amortisation of USD 6,000–10,000 per truck-year on a shared station. The hybrid, crediting its regen and engine-off idle, still burns 60–75% of the diesel baseline's fuel: USD 60,000–85,000 per truck-year.

On a five-year horizon at these energy prices, the TZ5Y's lower capital-versus-hybrid premium is repaid in 12–18 months of operating advantage, and the pure EV truck finishes roughly USD 250,000–400,000 ahead of the hybrid per unit. The hybrid's case survives only when the pure EV truck's enabling infrastructure does not exist and cannot be built — which is a site condition, not a vehicle comparison.
Every pure-EV mine programme we deliver starts with a power audit: available connection capacity, tariff or generation cost, solar potential, and the charge-or-swap topology that fits the haul rhythm. For 10–20 truck fleets on 5–8 km cycles, the answer is usually a 1–2 MW connection with a swap station (5–6 minute exchanges keep trucks cycling continuously) or 240–360 kW DC chargers at the load and dump points with queue charging. For solar-rich sites, a 2–4 MWh LFP buffer with a 1 MW array takes the mine fully off its diesel-and-grid exposure. That infrastructure is USD 400,000–1.2 million depending on scale — real money, but it is mine-side capital that serves every subsequent electric truck, including the mixer, water and service vehicles that follow. The hybrid requires none of it and benefits from none of it.
One final procurement note: compare warranties, not just spec sheets. The TZ5Y's CATL pack carries the 8-year/4,500-cycle warranty — on a mining duty of two cycles per day, that is a decade of covered life. Hybrid batteries, cycled harder relative to their smaller capacity, typically warrant for fewer years, and the engine's maintenance economics return in year three regardless of the battery's health. Ask both vendors for the SoH-versus-cycle curve; the shape of that line decides your residual value.
Remote-mine serviceability is where the architectural comparison turns practical. The TZ5Y's maintenance footprint is deliberately small: no engine oil or filters, no turbo, no aftertreatment, no fuel system — the high-voltage drivetrain's service items are coolant, gear oil, brakes (which regenerative braking spares), and the cooling loop. A mine's existing heavy-electricians, with HV certification from our commissioning programme, handle the first line; the CATL pack is serviceable through regional CATL industrial-battery networks, and the swap-station variant moves pack health management entirely to the station operator. The hybrid carries the full diesel engine service stack — oil, filters, injectors, aftertreatment — plus its HV layer: effectively two maintenance systems on one truck, at a mine where diesel parts logistics are already the maintenance department's daily burden. On a fly-in-fly-out site, a week waiting for an injector or an HV connector is a week of lost haulage; the machine with the shorter, simpler parts list keeps more of its calendar. Fleets that have run both classes consistently report availability 8–15 points higher on the pure electric fleet — a margin that quietly dominates any spec-sheet comparison.
