Chattogram's Port and Hills: TZ3Z Electric Dump Truck Strategy for Bangladesh's Second City

TZ3Z electric dump truck EV truck on construction duty in Chattogram, Bangladesh

Chattogram is Bangladesh's trade engine — the port complex moves the garments-led export economy's containers and the country's imports — and it is simultaneously a construction economy: the port's own expansion (the Bay Terminal programme), the city's hill-side residential development, the Economic Zone build-outs along the Sitakunda corridor, and the road programmes that connect them. We covered Dhaka's construction fleets and the RMG corridor at national level; this piece is the port-city electric truck strategy — the TZ3Z 8x4 electric dump truck (CATL 400 kWh LFP, 510 kW, 55 t GCW) on the construction and materials flows, with the KT5M electric box truck on port-city distribution. Country import context is in the Bangladesh market guide.

The Chattogram Freight Map

Four flows define the city's truck work:

The first two flows electrify immediately; the third is the showcase — the duty cycle where electric drivetrains humiliate diesel on wear costs.

Hill Duty: Where Electric Wins Hardest

The hill-cutting loops are the extreme end of stop-start: loaded descents, crawling climbs, dust, and constant directional changes. On this duty a diesel tipper's maintenance ledger runs riot — clutches, brakes, differentials, turbo ingestion — while the TZ3Z's drivetrain simply does not have the parts that fail:

Metric (hill-loop duty)Diesel 8x4TZ3Z electric
Energy/fuel per kmUSD 0.48 (fuel, incl. idle)USD 0.14 at Bangladeshi industrial tariff
Maintenance per kmUSD 0.16–0.20 (clutch/brake duty)USD 0.06
Brake service intervalEvery 2–3 months on descentsRegen carries most braking — 3–4x longer
Dust ingestion wearFilters, turbo, engine wearSealed drivetrain — none

At 50,000 km/year on mixed construction duty, the TZ3Z's combined energy-plus-maintenance saving reaches USD 25,000–30,000 per truck per year — payback on the electric premium in roughly 24 months on the toughest duty in the fleet.

The KT5M on Port Distribution

The port-city distribution fleet runs the same mission profile as our Dhaka analysis, in Chattogram's more compact geography: CATL 262/310 kWh on an 18 t GVW chassis, box and curtain bodies, and daily distances inside 150 km that a single overnight charge covers with margin. Charging rides on the same depot infrastructure as the construction fleet — the two fleets share yards, chargers and technicians, which is why we specify the mixed-fleet structure rather than single-mission deployments in port cities.

Monsoon Engineering as Standard

Chattogram is monsoon-hard: months of heavy rain, hill-side runoff and flood-prone yards. Our Bangladesh specification is the tropical package at full strength — IP68 HV systems, sealed electronics, e-coated chassis against the salt-humid port air — plus the depot flood-discipline items from our corrosion engineering piece: chargers on elevated plinths, drainage routed away from the electrical room, and a post-flood HV inspection routine after every major rain event. These are delivery-standard on Bangladesh-bound units, not options.

Charging Around the Port City

A mixed first-phase fleet — eight TZ3Z, eight KT5M — needs:

  1. Two 240 kW DC chargers at the quarry/materials yard, charging during loading queues.
  2. Three 120 kW points at the port-area depot for overnight distribution-fleet charging.
  3. Solar augmentation: 60–100 kWp on depot roofs — between monsoon bursts, Chattogram's solar yield is strong, and the array covers a third of daytime charging at near-zero marginal cost.

Budget near USD 220,000–280,000 all-in, repaid by the combined fleet's fuel savings inside two years at Bangladeshi fuel prices.

Receiving and Supporting the Fleet

Chattogram-bound units ship to the city's own port 12–16 days from China — the shortest delivery lane we operate into a market — with the Bangladesh package covering customs entry, conformity documentation, RHD as standard, and Bengali/English documentation and driver training. A port-adjacent spares kit keeps the parts line short; Chattogram's traffic rewards self-sufficiency more than most cities we serve.

The port is expanding, the hills are being developed, the zones are being built — and every tonne of that decade moves on trucks. The operators who electrify Chattogram's rings now will hold the cost position in Bangladesh's hardest-duty freight market, on the electrons of a national grid that is adding renewables every year.
