Thar Coal Fields Electrified: TE8P Electric Heavy-Haul Truck Strategy for Pakistan's Energy Corridor

Pakistan's Thar coalfield in Sindh is one of the country's strategic energy projects: open-pit lignite mines feeding a growing cluster of mine-mouth power plants that now supply a meaningful share of the national grid. The operation at the centre of it runs one of the country's most intense heavy-haul routines — overburden and coal moving in continuous cycles between pit, dump area and plant stockyard, in 50 °C summers, on engineered mine roads. The irony of that diesel fleet — hauling the country's fuel supply while burning imported fuel to do it — is the opportunity. This piece sets out the electric truck heavy-haul strategy for Thar-class operations: the TE8P 6x4 electric tractor (CATL 600 kWh LFP, 550 kW peak, 120 t GCW) and the TZ3V 8x4 electric dump truck (CATL 600 kWh, 95 t GCW in mining trim). Pakistan country context is in the Pakistan market guide.

The Thar Duty Cycle: Electric Heavy-Haul's Best Case

Mine haulage is the most favourable duty cycle in trucking for electrification, and Thar's version concentrates all the advantages:

Our measurements on comparable open-pit duty put regenerative recovery at 18–25% of consumed energy in pit-and-dump cycling — the descending empty leg partially refuels the ascending loaded leg.

The TZ3V takes the overburden cycles — the hardest duty — where its quad-axle spread and dual-motor torque manage loaded ramps that punish diesel tippers. The TE8P takes the coal run to the plant, hauling side-tipper trains at high GCW on the flat mine-to-plant corridor.

The Economics of Mine-Mouth Electrification

A mine-mouth power plant sells electricity to the grid at tariff — but the coal it burns to make that electricity costs the plant nothing at the margin but mining cost. The arithmetic of using that electricity to run the mine's own trucks is extraordinary:

On a 30-truck overburden fleet, that is roughly a million dollars a year — and it converts imported-fuel exposure into domestic lignite-fired electrons, which is the exact energy-security argument that built Thar in the first place.

Charging Design Inside the Mine

Thar's charging build is easier than most mines because the plant is the neighbour:

  1. Plant-yard 360 kW bank: four to six 360 kW CCS2 chargers fed from the plant's own switchyard, charging the coal-haul TE8P fleet during shift changes and planned holdpoints.
  2. Mine-workshop points: 360 kW fast chargers at the mine maintenance complex for the overburden TZ3V fleet, with shift-change staggered charging in two banks.
  3. Solar hybrid: Thar's desert solar resource is among the best in Asia — a 1–2 MWp array with battery buffering can cover a meaningful share of daytime charging and harden the whole system against grid events.
  4. Battery swap option: for 24/7 overburden cycles, swap-compatible configurations convert the 40-minute charge into a 5–6 minute battery exchange, raising truck availability to match the diesel roster's utilisation assumptions.

Heat Engineering: 50 °C Operations

Thar's summer is among the harshest operating environments in trucking. Our desert specification addresses it: a high-ambient battery thermal management system sized to hold cell temperature in the optimal band at 50 °C ambient, upgraded cooling capacity on the motor and inverter circuits, solar-reflective cab glass and insulation, and a derate-management protocol that keeps the trucks working through the June–August peak where diesel units lose power to charge-air cooling limits. Electric drivetrains hold a specific advantage here: they lose essentially nothing to altitude or hot intake air, where turbo-diesel output sags measurably in exactly the hours the mine runs hardest.

Dust, Driver Comfort and the Social Case

Coal and overburden haulage is among the least desirable driving work in Pakistan — heat, dust, vibration and noise. The electric cab changes the occupation: near-silent operation, no clutch work in shift-after-shift cycling, no diesel exhaust in the cab loop, and vibration levels materially lower than a big diesel at mine speeds. Mines that have electrified report measurably better driver retention on haul units — a real operating advantage in a labour market where experienced haul drivers are the scarcest resource in the roster.

Receiving and Supporting the Fleet

Thar-bound units ship to Karachi's Port Qasim, 400 km from the mine on the M-9 and connected highway — RoRo for tractors and tippers, with flat-rack an option for multi-unit consignments. Pakistan's import treatment of electric vehicles is favourable relative to diesel, and our package handles the full stack: PSQCA conformity documentation, customs entry, registration support, and English/Urdu-language operator materials. A site-depot spares inventory — consumables, HV connectors, thermal system components — is standard for remote-site deployments of this scale, matched to the fleet size so the mine never waits on a Karachi parts run.

The Mine That Hauls Itself

Thar exists to make electricity. Running its haul fleet on that electricity is the logical closing of the loop — lower cost per tonne, no imported fuel exposure, no power derating in the summer peak, and a domestic energy chain from pit to wheel. The mine operators who electrify the overburden and coal cycles first will set the hauling benchmark for every lignite project that follows.
