TE9L vs Mercedes-Benz eActros 600: Long-Haul Electric Tractor Comparison for Export Fleets

Dongfeng TE9L electric tractor compared against European long-haul electric trucks — EV truck comparison guide

Fleet buyers outside Europe evaluating a long-haul electric tractor usually shortlist one European premium unit and one value-engineered alternative, then discover the comparison is not really about specifications — it is about service radius, parts logistics and whether the vehicle's support model functions in their market. The Dongfeng TE9L electric tractor — CATL 400/497/600 kWh LFP, LvKong 350 kW rated / 520 kW peak, DF601S/DF162E axles — is the unit we put forward against European premium tractors, and this article makes the comparison honestly, including where the European product is genuinely ahead.

Where the eActros Is Genuinely Ahead

Three areas, and buyers deserve them stated plainly:

Where the TE9L Wins for Export Fleets

Outside those specific contexts, the balance shifts:

  1. Acquisition cost. The TE9L lands materially below a European premium tractor on a like-for-like specification. For a fleet buying 10–30 units, the difference funds the depot charging infrastructure.
  2. Service model for remote markets. In Africa, Central Asia, much of Southeast Asia and Latin America, European dealer support is thin or absent. Our export model is built for this: operator and technician training, a 12-month spares kit shipped with the order, remote diagnostics and documented warranty procedures. See our aftermarket capability.
  3. Parts availability and lead time. Common wear parts for our platform are stocked for export; European-brand parts in a remote market can mean weeks of downtime.
  4. LFP pack warranty that is simple to evidence. 8 years / 4,500 cycles to 80% SOH, with SOH readable from the vehicle — which makes a warranty claim a data exercise rather than a negotiation.
  5. Configuration flexibility. GB/T or CCS2, RHD or LHD, and specification packages for high ambient temperature, altitude and dust — which is what export duty actually requires.

Range: Read the Conditions, Not the Headline

The eActros 600's headline range is achieved under favourable European conditions: temperate climate, good roads, moderate payload. The TE9L's figures behave differently under export conditions:

Operating conditionEffect on rangeTE9L mitigation
45 °C ambient−10 to −16% (HVAC and pack cooling)Tropical thermal package, pre-condition on grid power
Altitude above 2,500 mReduced air density; electric drivetrain unaffected in power, cooling load risesCalibrated thermal package; see altitude performance
Poor road surface−15 to −35% from rolling resistanceRoute-aware energy planning, not headline range
Sustained gradient−25 to −45% on the climb, partial regen recoveryLeg-by-leg energy modelling

The correct method is to model your own corridor, not to compare brochures. Our real-world range testing methodology explains how we do it.

Charging Interface: The Practical Divider

In Europe, CCS2 is universal and the eActros is native to it. In export markets the picture is mixed:

For a fleet installing its own depot chargers, interface choice is yours to make and should be made once, fleet-wide.

Gulf Operations: Where the Choice Is Clearest

Gulf fleets illustrate the decision well. Operating conditions — 45–50 °C ambient, long desert corridors, sand — require thermal and filtration packages that are standard on our export specification. European premium trucks are engineered for European duty; our Gulf packages are engineered for Gulf duty. Combined with lower industrial electricity tariffs and long single-corridor distances, the TE9L performs strongly in the region. Our Saudi Arabia market page covers deployment and support, with related reading in Gulf policy and incentives, charging network planning and TE9L GCC market analysis.

Which Should You Buy?

Choose the European premium tractor if you operate primarily inside the EU, value dealer density above acquisition cost, and plan to sell the vehicle into the European used market. Choose the TE9L if you operate in Africa, the Gulf, Central Asia, Southeast Asia or Latin America; if service responsiveness in a remote market matters more than badge; or if your capital budget must cover both vehicles and charging infrastructure. Many fleets run both — European units on European legs, TE9L units on export corridors — and our TE9L European corridor analysis addresses that mixed case directly.

Questions to Put to Both Suppliers

Whichever way a fleet leans, the same six questions should be put to both suppliers in writing, because the answers are more revealing than the brochures.

  1. What is the continuous motor rating, and at what ambient temperature is it guaranteed? Peak figures are marketing; continuous rating at your operating temperature is engineering.
  2. What is the stated range, and under what payload, speed, gradient and ambient? A range without conditions is not a specification.
  3. What is the battery warranty in cycles and years, and what state-of-health threshold triggers remedy? Compare like for like: 8 years / 4,500 cycles to 80% SOH is a specific commitment.
  4. Where are spares held, and what is the lead time to my depot? This is usually decisive outside Europe.
  5. What training is included, for how many technicians, and in what language?
  6. Can I read state of health and fault data without proprietary tooling? If not, every diagnostic event becomes a dealer visit.

Suppliers that answer all six specifically are the ones that will still be supporting the fleet in year seven. Our own answers are documented in aftermarket and parts supply and SOH diagnostics, and the evaluation framework is expanded in our RFP guide.
