Every serious international fleet buyer now asks the same question in two halves: what does a European electric tractor like the DAF XF Electric deliver for its price, and what does a Chinese flagship like the Dongfeng TE9L deliver for roughly half of it? The XF Electric — DAF's battery-electric variant of Europe's workhorse XF cab-over — is a genuine engineering achievement: 270–525 kWh pack options, PACCAR's dealer network across Europe, and cab comfort refined over decades of continental haulage. The TE9L is our answer from the other direction: 600 kWh of CATL LFP energy, a 360 kW-class LvKong drive, 49 t GCW capability and an FOB around USD 118,000–145,000. This comparison is written for the buyer deciding between them — and for the buyer in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia or Latin America deciding whether the European badge is worth the premium in their market at all. For the corridor analysis behind long-haul electric duty, see our companion piece on Kazakhstan's emerging electric corridor market.
| Parameter | Dongfeng TE9L | DAF XF Electric |
|---|---|---|
| Battery options | CATL LFP up to ~600 kWh | ~210–525 kWh depending on variant |
| Drive output | ~360 kW class | ~240–350 kW depending on variant |
| GCW | Up to 49 t (market-dependent) | 44 t (EU 40 t + deviations) |
| Range at GCW, real-world | 320–380 km | ~250–500 km by pack |
| Charging | CCS2 DC 240 kW class | CCS2 up to 375 kW (MCS planned industry-wide) |
| Battery warranty frame | 8 years / 4,500 cycles | Typically 5–8 years, market-specific |
| Price, ex-works | USD 118,000–145,000 FOB | EUR 250,000–350,000+ depending on market and incentives |
The price line deserves immediate framing. In Europe, purchase incentives, CO2 credit economics and dealer-financing structures narrow the effective gap — the XF Electric's sticker is not what a European fleet pays net. Outside Europe, none of those supports exist: a Middle Eastern, African or Central Asian buyer pays full price for both trucks, and the effective delivered-price gap runs 2:1 or wider. That is the market reality this comparison is really about.

Run the same corridor duty — 300 km/day, 45 t GCW, 330 operating days — in a Gulf or Central Asian market with diesel at USD 0.85/L and electricity at USD 0.07/kWh:
Same physics, different arithmetic. The XF Electric is a superb truck priced for a European support-and-incentive ecosystem; outside that ecosystem, the buyer pays the badge premium without receiving the offsetting machinery. The TE8L covers the 49 t segment at a lower price point for shorter corridors if the TE9L's range is more than the duty needs.
Three things we tell every TE9L buyer plainly. First, EU-market entry is not its game — homologation and dealer economics make the XF Electric the rational EU choice; the TE9L's markets are the rest of the world. Second, cab comfort, while improving every generation, is not the DAF XF cabin — fleets whose drivers expect European ergonomics should trial before committing. Third, local service depends on our spares-and-remote-diagnostics package rather than a native dealer web — we mitigate with first-year consignments and regional technicians, but a buyer in a very remote market should plan a technician training programme as part of the order.
Buying in Europe: the XF Electric, because its price is net of supports and its dealer web is unmatched. Buying anywhere the sun is hot and the budget is real: the TE9L delivers 600 kWh of CATL range, 49 t capability and a two-year payback that the European badge cannot mathematically justify. The global electric tractor market is splitting exactly along that line — and it is why the TE9L's order book grows fastest in the markets Europe forgot to subsidise.
Some buyers, reading this comparison, ask which truck a fleet should buy if it operates in both worlds — European routes and everything else. The portfolio answer is increasingly common among the international groups we serve: XF Electric-class units for the EU-regulated business where their supports and dealer web apply, TE9L-class units for the Gulf, African, Central Asian and Latin American corridors where their price and thermal engineering win, and a single charging-standards discipline (CCS2) across both so that the depot architecture never forks. The badge on the grille matters less than the honest match of machine to market — and the honest match, outside Europe, has been decided by arithmetic. DAF builds a superb truck for the ecosystem it was engineered for; we build one for the other eighty percent of the planet's freight corridors.
Both companies will sell every truck they can build this decade. The buyer's job is only to make sure each one is working on the right continent.
