Kumasi Construction Goes Electric: TZ5E and KTA1 Electric Truck Strategy for Ghana's Garden City

Kumasi is West Africa's fastest-moving construction market that most fleet planners have never modelled. Ghana's second city and the capital of the Ashanti Region is in the middle of a sustained build-out: road dualisation projects radiating toward Obuasi, Ejisu and Sunyani, the Kejetia market redevelopment, hospital and university expansions, and a housing programme that consumed record volumes of sand, chippings and cement in 2025. Every tonne of that material moves by truck from quarry to site — and most of those quarries sit within a 40 km ring of the city centre.

That geography is the reason an electric truck fleet works in Kumasi before it works almost anywhere else in the region. Aggregates haulage runs on fixed loops of 20 to 60 km, loaded one way and empty the other, returning to the same quarry yard every night. The TZ5E 6x4 electric dump truck with CATL 400 kWh LFP and the KTA1 8x4 electric dump truck with CATL 352 kWh were practically designed for this duty cycle. Ghana's context — duties, grid power and RHD configuration — is covered in our Ghana market guide.

The Kumasi Aggregates Map

Kumasi's building-material supply comes from four main clusters. Understanding them determines your charging strategy:

A diesel tipper burning through these loops consumes fuel at its worst efficiency point: constant loading queues, crawler-speed site tipping, and gradient on the Kumasi plateau. An electric tipper turns that same duty cycle into its best case. Regenerative braking recovers 15–25% of energy on the loaded-descending legs, and the electric PTO hoist raises the body without a drop of burned fuel while the truck is stationary.

Choosing Between the TZ5E and KTA1

These two electric dump trucks overlap less than their names suggest. The split we recommend for Kumasi fleets:

ParameterTZ5E 6x4KTA1 8x4
Battery (CATL LFP)400 kWh352 kWh
Motor315 / 510 kW352 kWh pack, dual motor
Rating25 t GVW31 t GVW
Typical body15–18 m³ hardox tipper20–24 m³, quad-axle spread
Best Kumasi dutyIn-city muck, sand, Kejetia areaQuarry chippings, 40 km+ legs
Indicative FOBUSD 88,000–105,000USD 92,000–112,000

The rule of thumb: if your average loaded leg is under 25 km and the truck returns to one yard each night, the TZ5E's larger battery and tighter turning circle win. If you run 40–70 km quarry legs at 31 t GVW, the KTA1's axle spread and payload advantage pay for the difference within the first year.

Charging Design for a Quarry-Based Fleet

The elegant feature of quarry logistics is that the loading point is fixed — and a fixed loading point is a charging point. Kumasi-area quarries typically have grid supply for crushers and screens, with room on the loadout apron for chargers. A practical two-site design:

This quarry-plus-yard architecture means you buy fewer chargers than trucks — typically one DC fast point per four to five tippers — because the loading queue does half the charging work.

Per-Tonne Economics in the Ashanti Context

Modelling a Kumasi quarry loop — 45 km round trip, 20 t payload, five trips a day, 280 days a year — against a diesel 8x4 tipper at Ghanaian fuel prices:

Metric (per truck-year)Diesel 8x4KTA1 electric
Distance63,000 km63,000 km
Energy costUSD 24,800USD 7,900
MaintenanceUSD 9,400USD 4,600
Cost per tonne movedUSD 0.055/t-km equivalentUSD 0.021/t-km equivalent
Payback on CAPEX premium22–28 months

At Ghanaian diesel prices — among the highest in West Africa because of the import-refined supply chain and cedi depreciation pressure — the fuel line alone repays the electric premium in under two and a half years of double-shift quarry duty. Add the 8-year/4,500-cycle CATL battery warranty and the residual value of a healthy LFP pack, and the eight-year fleet math is not close.

Import Route: Tema to Kumasi

Kumasi fleets receive vehicles through Tema port, 270 km south on a mostly rehabilitated dual carriageway. Ghana applies ECOWAS CET with the reduced EV duty band, and Ghana Standards Authority conformity assessment runs through PVoC inspectors in China before loading. Practical notes for Ashanti buyers: RHD is standard across the Dongfeng EV line; we ship tippers either RoRo with bodies fitted or flat-rack for multi-unit consignments; and we pre-position a fast-moving spares kit — coolant, brake components, HV connectors, suspension bushings — sized to your fleet so the first year runs without a container wait.

Start With Six, Scale With the City

Kumasi's construction cycle has at least a decade to run, and the quarry ring around the city is compact enough that a six-truck pilot with one quarry charger and a small city yard proves the full business case inside twelve months. Operators who wait for Accra-scale infrastructure programmes will find that the Ashanti operators who moved early have already locked in the cheap kilometres.
