Before committing a multi-unit order, a serious fleet should run a structured electric truck demo, because a two-week trial on your own routes reveals the real energy number that a brochure cannot. This guide sets out how to run an EV truck evaluation and what data to capture.
A showroom walkaround tells you nothing about range under your load, your gradients and your drivers. A Dongfeng TE8M electric tractor may show 350 km range in a light test but deliver 250 km under a full regional load in hot weather, and only a live trial exposes that gap. Two weeks lets you cover weekday peaks, a rest-day lull and at least one worst-case day, which is the data a finance team needs to approve a purchase.
The trial also de-risks the people side. Drivers who have only driven diesel will either love the instant torque or distrust the silence, and you want that reaction surfaced and trained away before you own twenty units. A two-week window is long enough for the novelty to wear off and for real shift behaviour, good and bad, to show up in the logs.
Build the trial around your real operation, not a vendor route:
Log the following per vehicle so the report is defensible:
The trial should produce a per-km economics table like the one below, using your local electricity and diesel prices. This is the number that wins or loses the board meeting.
| Metric | TE8M electric tractor | Comparable diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Energy use | 1.1 to 1.6 kWh/km | 0.35 to 0.5 L/km |
| Energy cost at your rate | $0.08 to 0.20 per kWh | $0.90 to 1.20 per L |
| Cost per km | $0.13 to 0.32 | $0.32 to 0.60 |
| Daily saving at 300 km | $57 to $84 per truck | |
| Service saving per year | $3k to $6k per truck | |
The TE8M electric tractor runs a 400 kWh CATL LFP pack with a 282 to 510 kW LvKong motor and a FOB price of $95k to $125k. On a 2026 Algeria trial we recommend a 282 to 424 kWh sibling for shorter loops and the full 400 kWh unit for 300 km regional haul. The Algeria electric truck market is warming to electric haul as fuel subsidies shift, and a documented trial is the fastest way to win internal approval there.
For the Algerian heat, watch the cooling window closely. The pack is liquid cooled and rated for 25 to 35 deg C, and in summer ambient well above 40 deg C the cooling loop works hard but stays in band. If your trial shows even one derating event outside that window under your real load, that is a spec mismatch to resolve with the exporter before you order, not after.
Agree the pass thresholds with your exporter before the truck arrives, so the result is binary:
Shaanxi Fenghan Trading Co., Ltd arranges the demo unit, the charger specs and a data sheet covering the 210 to 600 kWh pack range. The team can also connect you with a nearby operator already running the model so your trial mirrors a proven duty cycle rather than a guess.
Ask for a signed acceptance sheet at the end of the trial that records the measured kWh per km, the achieved range and any deviations. That sheet is not paperwork, it is the commercial anchor for your order: if the production units fall short of the demo, you have a documented benchmark to invoke the warranty or renegotiate, and that protection is worth more than the demo itself.
A demo is a team sport, not a procurement solo. Put the regular drivers behind the wheel, because their habits, not a tester's, are what the truck will see in service. Include the maintenance lead so they can read the telematics and judge service access. Bring the finance analyst who will model the total cost of ownership, because the per-km saving only lands if the energy and service assumptions are captured live. Finally, include one sceptic, the person most likely to flag a problem, because a trial that everyone agrees with too easily hides the issues you most need to see.
Set the acceptance criteria with this group before the truck arrives, not after. If drivers, maintenance and finance each write their own pass threshold, the final report is a clean yes or no rather than a debate. The TE8M or its 282 to 424 kWh sibling should be measured against the exact duty it will run, so the people who own that duty must own the criteria and sign off on the result.
The trial is worthless if the result stays in a driver's notebook. Capture everything in a single report that finance can read without translation: measured kWh per km, achieved range under load, charge time in the 20 to 80 percent window, any thermal events, and the driver score. Then convert those numbers into the two figures the board cares about, the cost per km versus diesel and the payback period on the higher EV price, and run the model at both your best and worst case electricity prices because a volatile tariff can swing the payback by a year.
With that report in hand, the decision to order becomes a spreadsheet, not a leap of faith. Do not let the trial end without a total-cost-of-ownership model that spans the full warranty, because the eight-year or 4,500-cycle pack warranty means most battery risk sits with the manufacturer, and that changes the resale math in year six when a diesel would be due for a major overhaul. Finance should carry that warranty value as a line item, because it is real money a diesel simply does not offer. Shaanxi Fenghan Trading Co., Ltd can supply the data sheet and a comparable diesel baseline so finance has both sides of the equation on one page.
