Zero-Emission Concrete: Dongfeng TZ8J 8x4 Electric Mixer Truck for Construction Sites

Dongfeng TZ8J 8x4 electric concrete mixer truck — a 45t GCW EV truck with 8 m³ drum for construction sites

A concrete mixer is one of the harshest vehicles in existence to electrify — and one of the most rewarding. Harsh because the drum must keep rotating for the entire journey, drawing continuous power on top of traction; rewarding because mixer duty runs short fixed loops from batching plant to site, the drum PTO gorges on electricity that would otherwise be burned as diesel at idle, and city construction sites are exactly where noise and exhaust rules tighten first. The Dongfeng TZ8J is our 8x4 electric mixer for this duty — 45 t GCW, an 8 m³ drum, CATL 333 kWh, and LvKong 350/520 kW drive. This is how it performs in the field.

The Mixer Duty Cycle, Quantified

A city mixer's day is a repeated loop: load at the batching plant, haul 15–40 km to site, queue at the pump, discharge, return. What the schedule conceals is how much of a diesel mixer's fuel is burned standing still:

The TZ8J replaces all of it with one battery. The electric drum drive draws a fraction of what a diesel PTO system wastes through hydraulic conversion, and every idle minute costs nothing. In measured deployments, electric mixers cut energy cost per delivered cubic metre by 50–65% against diesel.

Economics per Cubic Metre

Take a typical plant serving metro construction: 12 loads per day, 6 m³ average load, 50 km round trip including plant and site dwell — most mixer operations run 250–350 km/day with drum time included. Diesel mixer consumption in this duty: 40–45 L/100 km effective plus idle — call it 130 L/day, USD 120–140. The TZ8J covering the same day, drum included, draws about 230–260 kWh: USD 20–29 at USD 0.09–0.11/kWh. Daily saving: USD 95–115, roughly USD 29,000–35,000 per year at 300 operating days. Maintenance on the hydraulic-diesel PTO chain (a chronic mixer cost centre) largely disappears with the electric drum drive. On a USD 120,000-class FOB price, the mixer premium over diesel pays back in 3–4 years on energy alone.

Silence as a Pour Licence

Urban construction is under pressure to extend working hours — but noise rules written for diesel machinery cap how early pours can begin and how late they can run. An electric mixer is dramatically quieter: no engine at the site, no hydraulic whine at the plant, drum drive hum only. Readymix operators report the practical consequence is earlier pour windows in residential and hospital zones, which is scheduling capacity the competition literally cannot buy. Several city authorities now explicitly favour low-noise, zero-emission equipment in night-work permits.

Drum and Discharge Engineering

  1. Electric drum drive with precise speed control — mixing speed in transit, agitation speed in the queue, full discharge rotation on site, all from the traction battery.
  2. Reinforced 8x4 chassis with the drum's high centre of gravity accounted for in suspension tuning; mixers lean through corners loaded, and the frame and axles are KC-proven components.
  3. Wash-down system at the plant — routine mixer hygiene (drum chipping, wash water) unchanged from diesel practice.
  4. 45 t GCW rating sized for the full 8 m³ drum load plus water tank on regional axle-loading rules.

The rule is simple: if your market demands EU type approval, the KT9X is the tool; everywhere else, the TZ8J delivers the same electric mixing concept at lower cost with the bigger regional support footprint. We quote both from the same factory line, and mixer bodies are built by our partner bodybuilders to your drum specification.
