West Africa grows close to half the world's raw cashew nuts, and the crop moves along one of the region's most distinctive trade lanes: a February-to-July river of jute-bagged nuts flowing from buying stations across Côte d'Ivoire's north, northern Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali down to the processing plants and port terminals of San Pedro, Abidjan, Tema and Lomé. It is a seasonal, high-volume, corridor-shaped logistics problem — and corridor-shaped logistics is what electric trucks do best. This piece maps an electric cashew fleet around the KT5M electric box truck for the collection and processing legs and the TE46 electric tractor for the trunk hauls to port. Country context is in our Côte d'Ivoire market guide.
The corridor has three tiers, each with different duty cycles:
The second and third tiers are where the electric opportunity lives. Regional consolidation runs fixed routes between fixed points with overnight returns to a warehouse that can host a charger; trunk evacuation runs scheduled, high-utilisation loads that justify fast-charging infrastructure on the corridor.
| Tier | Vehicle | Load | Charging pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regional consolidation | KT5M (262 kWh, 18 t GVW) | 8–12 t bagged nuts | Overnight at regional warehouse |
| Trunk evacuation | TE46 (400 kWh, 42 t GCW) | 25–30 t in curtainsider | Overnight + mid-corridor 240 kW top-up |
| Processing plant supply | KT5M box | Plant-to-plant transfers | Plant-yard charging during unloading |
The KT5M's 300 km rated range covers any single consolidation leg with margin; the TE46 with a mid-corridor top-up handles the Korhogo–San Pedro run (roughly 550 km) as an overnight double-leg with a charging stop at the Daloa or Yamoussoukro belt. Both are LHD, the regional standard.
Cashew is seasonal — but the corridor is not idle off-season. The same warehouses and trucks move cotton northbound after ginning, maize and millet at harvest, shea nuts in the Burkinabé and northern Ghanaian belt, and general cargo year-round. A fleet specified for cashew duty is a fleet for the whole Sahelian commodity calendar. The electric drivetrain's low off-season holding cost (no engine corrosion from months of idling, no fuel system degeneration, battery self-discharge measured in single-digit percentages per month) makes seasonal utilisation patterns less punishing than for diesel.
Modelling a TE46 doing trunk evacuation through the season — 300 round trips of 550 km, 165,000 km/year on the heaviest corridors:
Even at half that annual distance — a more typical mixed utilisation — payback stays inside 30 months. The corridor's economics are strong enough that a cooperative or processor group can underwrite the fleet against the season's trading margin rather than seeking external finance.
The corridor's fixed geography means a handful of charging points electrify hundreds of kilometres:
The cashew trade's structure favours early electrification more than most commodities: a handful of large processors and exporters control the volumes, they operate or contract fixed fleets on fixed lanes, and their buyers — Vietnamese and Indian kernel processors, then European and American snack and ingredient brands — face tightening supply-chain emissions expectations. A processor that can document that its raw-nut evacuation ran on electricity from Sahel solar holds a marketing asset that no diesel competitor can copy quickly. Several of our West African conversations in 2026 began exactly there: with the buyer's questionnaire, not the fuel price.
Corridor fleets receive through San Pedro, Abidjan or Tema — RoRo for tractors and box trucks alike, with UEMOA conformity inspection arranged in China before loading. Our package includes French-language documentation, driver training for francophone teams, a tropical corrosion specification for the humid southern legs, and pre-positioned spares at the operator's regional warehouses so a corridor breakdown never waits on an import container. Transit from China runs 28–35 days; ordering against the season calendar (delivery by December for the February start) is the discipline we recommend.
The cashew corridor is West Africa's most electrifiable commodity lane: fixed, seasonal, high-margin and increasingly sustainability-audited. The operators who electrify it this season will own the cost and compliance position for the decade of demand growth that every forecast projects.
